Today, February 17th, is Ash Wednesday, the 1st day of Lent (marking 40 days 'till Easter). Lent commemorates the 40 days (not counting Sundays) that Jesus of Nazareth spent fasting in the desert while en route to Jerusalem to celebrate Passover and stir things up with the 'money changers', according to the Gospels. It concludes with Easter Sunday, symbolizing the day of resurrection (when Jesus rose from the dead and regained new life on the third day following an agonizing crucifixion).
Today, Lent is a time of fasting, moderation, reflection and for making positive changes, like giving up smoking or high sugar foods and drinks, or even just reducing a bad habit (like laziness or watching too much commercial TV). Some folks like to make a resolution, like being more positive, working out more, or volunteering to serve the less fortunate.
Stay safe and enjoy the coming Spring! Let's all have a great Lenten season!
